Pictures worth a thousand words – A clinic in desperate disrepair

Helen Suzman always used to say, “Go and see for yourself” – a mantra she certainly lived by during her 36 years as a member of Parliament, 13 of those years alone. It is a mantra that current DA MP Mike Waters has certainly taken to heart, in his role as spokesperson on child abuse and – more recently – as spokesperson on health.

Recently, he visited the Robbie Nurock day hospital – barely a stone’s throw from Parliament’s gate in Buitenkant Street. He took a few photos, and a colleague of mine has put them together in a slide show and uploaded them to Slideshare. This is what he saw:

He’s written to both the national and provincial ministers of health. Hopefully, they’ll take urgent action. No-one should have to face such squalid conditions, least of all when they are sick.

    Horrific. It looks like a derelict building, certainly not anywhere meant to provide healthcare even at its most basic level.
